QIARA PREGNANCY & BREASTFEEDING PROBIOTIC FAQ

How is Qiara Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Probiotic different?Qiara Probiotics contain a patented, single strain of beneficial bacteria, Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716, which has been isolated from breastmilk and is supported by clinical research. Breastmilk is our first food as humans and is the major factor in colonising the infant gut and building the immune system. Most other probiotics available contain bacteria isolated from the bowel or food.

Why is a healthy gut microbiome important for good health?A healthy gut microbiome plays a significant role in maintaining good health and well-being overall. It is also important for optimal preconception, pregnancy and postpartum health for both mum and baby.

What is dysbiosis?Dysbiosis describes an imbalance within the flora within the microbiome.

When choosing a probiotic, do more strains and a higher CFU count mean it is better?More strains and more ‘billions’ does not necessarily mean a better result. In fact, the strain used in Qiara has been shown to be just as efficacious at lower doses and as a single strain. Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716, has been heavily researched and its use and expected outcome is supported by specific clinical trials.

Why choose a single strain probiotic vs a multi-strain probiotic?Products claiming ‘broad spectrum’ probiotics which combine multiple strains have rarely been clinically trialled in their exact combinations. Some probiotics may inhibit each other and therefore the multi-strain probiotic may be ineffective, unless proven by clinical trials.

Do all probiotic strains survive our stomach acid and make it to our gut?No, each strain has different actions, and some strains don’t survive our stomach acid. Qiara uses Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716. This is a probiotic strain that originates from good bacteria in breastmilk so it naturally has high survivability of the gastrointestinal system.

How do I check my probiotic has the strain labelled? The strain is usually presented as numbers and letters. For example, Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716 – the ‘CECT5716’ is the strain.

Are the benefits of a probiotic from its genus, species or strain? The benefits and effectiveness of a probiotic are completely determined by its strain.

What should I read on a probiotic product label before buying?Probiotics are defined by genus, species and strain. The action of the probiotic is determined by its STRAIN. In Australia, probiotic products only need to label the genus and species. Therefore, if your probiotic does not list the strains, then you could be taking any probiotic that is not specific to your health needs.

Are all probiotics the same? No, it is important to choose a probiotic that has been specifically researched and evidenced for your health needs.

How does Qiara work?Lactobacillus fermentum CECT5716 (the probiotic strain originally isolated from breastmilk used in ALL Qiara Products) works by maintaining and supporting gastrointestinal and immune system health and increasing beneficial microflora throughout the body. Breastmilk is rich in probiotics, prebiotics and essential nutrients that helps humans establish a balanced microbiome, immune system, and healthy digestion throughout all life stages.

reduce breast pain and recurrence of mild mastitis restore and maintain good bacteria in breastmilk during and after antibiotic usemaintain a healthy microflora for mum and baby before, during and after pregnancyimprove digestive function and gut healthrestore good bacteria follwing a c-sectionimprove good bacteria growthmaintain gastrointestinal health

How does Qiara help mild mastitis?Clinical Research conducted using the single probiotic strain in Qiara,Lactobacillus Fermentum CECT5716, shows that it may reduce discomfort associated with breast pain and mild mastitis and the recurrence of mild mastitis.  Qiara achieves this by aggressively targeting and outcompeting the pathogenic bacteria in breast milk that may be causing the pain and infection. While necessary, antibiotics are not selective and can also reduce the levels of beneficial and protective flora in the breast milk. This can lead to an imbalance between the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria and a condition called Dysbiosis. Breast milk dysbiosis can lead to an increased risk of infections such as mastitis and can also impact the colonisation of the infant’s microbiome and consequent development of their immune system which may affect the health and immunity of the child for life. Taking Qiara daily before and after your C-section may assist in maintaining the balance of good bacteria in breast milk.

Taking Qiara daily before and after antibiotics may assist in maintaining the balance of good bacteria in the gut and in breast milk.

How can Qiara help preconception?Establishing good gut health and a strong and robust microbiome is important from pre-conception. Recent research suggests a healthy gut and reproductive microbiome may be beneficial for fertility outcomes.
